Neon Weekend ft. Lucy McGuinness – ‘Deeper Disco’ Volumes 1 & 2

‘Deeper Disco’ is a smooth, unaffected collection of harmonious songs. Borrowing the unsharpened vocals of Lucy McGuiness but keeping the focus on the flavours of the beat, this album is essential for anyone looking for a subdued, smooth selection of tracks to ricochet through their eardrums.

Many of the songs, such as ‘Square One’, are reasonably fast paced and would be suitable for the club environment, but are also strangely relaxed and mellow, creating a honeyed combination. The vocals are unimposing, simply serving as additions to increase the sense of variety instead of acting centrally. The songs are all subtly upbeat, particularly ‘Neverending’, which turns down a more creative path and is so damn funky I just can’t handle it.

Every song seems to lead on to the next, the beat so consistent that you can barely register the transition between songs. There are obviously some exceptions, like ‘Walking On’, which integrates urban, warped tones and a deeper beat to create a more individual sound. Similarly, ‘Carbon 14’ has lighter, glancing beats that, used in combination with electronic elements, establishes a more quirky sound.

Moreover, it is evident that the album has been adapted to fit the club scene, yet still maintains the individual style of the first album, Neon Weekend avoiding just spitting out clones of whatever is popular nowadays. The album sticks to it’s purpose of producing quality disco-infused deep and tech house, consistently.

‘Deeper Disco’ Volume 1 is out now exclusively on Traxsource but Volume 2 is yet to be given a release date.
