Muto – ‘I Know’

Remember ‘Plastic Dreams’ by Jaydee?…

YES!! I can hear you cry, all the way from my remote outpost in the deepest darkest reaches of outer Manchester (well, Salford, to be precise, before I get told off by the nearest and dearest).

For those of you going: “Nah bruv, I’ve never heard of no plastic dreams b4!” – congratulations, you’re well young init.

Anyway, I shouldn’t have even started this post by mentioning Plastic Dreams, because now you’re going to be thinking this is a r-r-remix of the classic 90s house cut; a track pretty much universally loved by ravers of all persuasions, and I’m only going to have to disappoint you by telling you it isn’t. Sorry about that.

But you already know this, right? ‘Cause you’ve already hit play?…

Well, if that’s the case, listen very carefully and see if you can’t notice (or should I say: “hear if you can’t notice?”) a very apparent nod to Jaydee, AKA Robin Albers’ 1993 masterpiece. Whether it’s intentional or not, I’ve no idea, but those Hammond-style keys are there like swimwear.

That being said, aside from the organ vibe and a little speed garagey skip in the percussion – a sound that’s been ubiquitous in what the kids call deep house since the East London massive resurrected it a couple of years back – there’s not a whole lot of similarity between this and ‘Plastic Dreams’.

But that’s a good thing, because it’s been remixed more times than Liz McDonald has changed a barrel. And once David Morales had put his stamp on it, there really was never any need for further reinterpretations. Although Micky Slim’s Bomb Squad mix was refreshingly different back in ’06 – as one YouTube commenter put it: “I dare u to find a better remix of 15 year old original track.” I’m not even paraphrasing.

What we’ve got here, though, is something custom-built for 2013. I don’t know if Muto has sampled ‘Plastic Dreams’. I’m not even sure the resemblance in the keys is calculated. But the more I listen to ‘I Know’ the more it sounds to me like he knows what he’s doing.
