Despite impressive solo careers, Dukwa and Herva combine once more under their Life’s Track alias to produce a rather unique 4 track EP for the Italian imprint Bosconi Records.
‘It Fell Down’ opens with subtle vinyl surface noise (giving the digital crew a taste of what they’re missing) before being drowned out by a delicate guitar riff that folds in on itself, escorted by a spiralling male vocal that’s dripping with reverb. The rawness grows on you way before the track gets going. Like a lost disco wonder found in a bargain bin, there’s that moment of clarity as elements begin to break through the filters. Teasing you right up to the point it caves and frees its thumping kick drum that’s been dying to break out. Similarly, ‘Come On’ is a teaser that drops unexpectedly, changing the overall syncopation of the record. Feinting and building up to the penultimate ghetto kick onslaught where some superbly intuitive high hat work is unleashed. This would often signify the conclusion to a track, but not with these lads, they always go that little bit extra.
‘Rescue Me’ continues the Ghetto theme. It’s as if the record is being tried and tested right in front of you. With raw percussion and vocal elements being frantically cued, added and then taken out before settling for short period of time with a groovy acid bassline… and that’s the cool down period. It feels like a live performance, as if Life’s Track are giving out rewards for those doing the graft and journeying with the record. Although, It’s not all high octane energy. Taking it down a notch the final track is possibly the most DJ friendly record on here, and that’s saying something. ‘Sometimes They Come Back’ is certainly the calmest, rocking pretty resonant pads and sudden injections of soft noise to bridge any gaps between the swaying kicks and snares, it’s a track you can really get lost in and suits as a fine closer. Further reiterating a common theme on this EP that I admire, doing what feels and sounds right as appose to what is thought to be right.
