Bass music producer Lamont’s latest release is a fresh sounding mix of grime influence, garage rhythms and steppa style beats. The track ‘Far Away’ begins with eerie synths and reverberations panning around my head like a moth around a light bulb. Recognisable speech samples from ‘Fight Club’ create that cinematic feel that pulls you right into the ambient, horror like sonic space and gives the track a bit of underlying context.
The mix evokes the feeling of early dubstep with mulitple deep sub basslines laying the foundation for the stomping low-mid bass line, which features when the main drops.
The off beat, lo-fi stings along side the swung, stabby hi hats emits that bouncey garage-like energy that just makes you want to break your beck to the beat. The serious strings also reminds me of old school grime instrumentals, it’s got that ‘screw-face’ element that when combined with dance music rhythms. This is a definite sign that Lamont is growing as a producer since his more chilled out, melodic sounds under the name ‘Calski’.
Lamont’s use of dynamics give his music an edge on other bass producers who just want to rush to the big drop. The ambient break downs between the beat drops have been finely designed to make each drop more hard hitting that the last. Whilst the track has a continuous, relentless rhythm, it also grows and becomes more interesting as each section unfolds, making it a desirable tune to mix into a set because it will keep giving you more to play with in the mix.
Clearly evolving the bass music sound Lamont has created a track which is dark and sinister but with a threatening energy that sounds hard as nails. It has that illegal rave sensation; I can perfectly imagine how that kind of minimal, audible blackness would go off in a dingy, inner city warehouse up in Manchester or being laced with grimey bars on some high-rise rooftop in London. This combination of sinister vibes and liveliness of funky garage rhythm is currently being pioneered acts like ‘My Nu Leng’ and ‘Taiki & Nulight’ and Lamont is definitely bringing something fresh to the bass scene
Lamont’s ‘Far Away’ EP will be dropping on October 27th on limited 12″ vinyl. Whilst you wait, check out the remix Zed Bias has provided for the release below.
