Kid Cedek – ‘WTFISAGENRE’

UK label Bass=Win has released ‘WTFISAGENRE’, the brand new EP by Atlanta’s Kid Cedek.

Having established himself on Atlanta’s vibrant underground party scene in 2009, Kid Cedek has steadily been building a sizeable following of bass music fans. A guest slot on Radio 1, along with appearances at the Vans Warped Tour, SXSW and Ultra haven’t done his career any harm either, and it now seems he’s emerging as a leading figure among a group of producers and DJs that are spearheading a bass music movement that’s free from genre boundaries.

By his label’s own admission: “Beatport is going to have a nightmare of a time figuring out which chart this EP will top” and, clearly, without even listening to a single beat, we can get a good idea of the ethos behind the release from the title alone. But people have been listening, though, and not just KC’s mounting crowd of Soundcloud followers – influential characters including A-Track and The Prodigy are among a long list of supporters whose names ring out.

In a move that’s unusual for a producer in any electronic scene (but nonetheless very welcome as far as we’re concerned) Kid Cedek has delivered an enlightening commentary on his new EP…

“The concept of the ‘WTFISAGENRE’ is to showcase some of my different styles of production. There are no boundaries on this one as the originals and remixes both pull from all kinds of sounds from around the world. I’ve put a lot of time and energy into this project and I hope you enjoy it.”

“’Rave 2 Da Grave’ starts off with a Kuduro Style drum pattern and a very happy vocal chop, then gets grittier on the first drop going into a Moombahton style rhythm, before coming out of that into a Hardstyle rhythym and another drum work flip.”

“The collaboration with Rell The Soundbender on ‘Handz Up’ exceeded my expectations and turned out to be a very high energy peak-hour club track. I honestly can’t describe this one… Listen – and listen loud!

“The original name for ‘Handz Up VIP’ was actually ‘Manos Arriba’, because of its reggaeton-influenced second drop. The same vocal sample in Handz Up was used on this track when I first created it, so I didn’t really want to confuse people, however, this track has very different drops once you get past the intro.

“If you’re not familiar with Kingman Fire, it’s an Arizona-based DJ/production duo, Melo & Pickster One. I’ve been a fan of their work and contribution to the Moombahton community since I first heard them years ago, and the percussive elements in their remix of ‘Handz Up’ truly encompass their sound – and that of the genre.

“Jesse Slayter is an up-and-coming Louisiana-based producer who is very talented. I first heard of him from ETC!ETC! and Bro Safari. He’s done a 140BPM Trap remix of ‘Handz Up’ and the chords in this one get me every time!”
