Jules & Moss – ‘Nans et Moots’ EP

Jules & Moss – ‘Nans et Moots’ EP

Due for release on July 1st, here we have another impressive Kittball release from talented French duo Jules & Moss. The EP contains five tracks in total with two unique remixes from the likes of Oliver Schories and Animal Trainer.

Upon a little research, I have discorvered that ‘Nans et Moots’ is, in fact, a pun. A French pun. For those wondering, ‘Nans et Mouts’ are the nicknames of Nans Thomassey and Guillaume Mouton, who star in a French TV show in which two men set off with no clothes, food or money and try to reach an objective through the kindness and generosity of strangers (who offer them lodging, transport etc). I’m not exactly sure how it’s relevant, but I’m sure it is. Somehow.

The original mix of ‘Nans et Moots’ has a steady, regular beat, terse until the integration of elongated notes, which submerge the beat and shift the tone to a darker shade. The lyrics are more spoken than sung, clipped to give a disjointed effect. This in turn gives the song a sense of discord while staying centred on the beat, tying it up. The Oliver Schories remix takes the song and shakes it up, gives it a rumbling undertone and warps the voice, basically producing the song’s hot sister. The beat is more lively and, through this, the song is shaped for a more hardcore audience. The Animal Trainer remix makes the song mostly unrecognisable but it does a pretty good job in recreating it, placing more emphasis on the vocal input.

‘Golden Cheebre’ is immediately more upbeat, made so through the less curt beat and the integration of guitar and, surprisingly, piano elements. The inclusion of other instruments, as they so often do, round off the hardness of the beat, making the song more melodious and make the tone more playful than ‘Nans et Moots’. The vocals are what sounds like a recording of the first American man they could find and an almost ludicrously stereotypically French accent, but it somehow isn’t terrible.

‘Auto-Like’ is much less beat-focused, making it softer and forming a much gentler atmosphere. It is completely relaxed, conveying an animated melancholy, and seems to drain the stress from your body throughout its duration. I would highly recommend listening to this one last.
