There’s just a few criteria you need to hit, to land yourself a place on Minus, one of Richie Hawtin’s many brainchild projects and the utmost respected record label for forward-thinking music. Firstly, you have to be good with lashing out on the music front… obviously. Secondly, you have to really bring it when you play sets live, lastly, if it’s not progressive or at the least pushing boundaries… you’re probably not going to fit in the shoes.
Jon Gaiser, or just Gaiser for short, has been doing all of the latter, and time after time has shown us why he’s not just a namesake on a lauded label. After all, could you really be stagnant around Richie Hawtin the Sake pusher? Certainly not, this week has seen Gaiser release his third album ‘False Light’ (if you count all the different monikers that is) on Minus, a place he’s called home loyally since 2005. So what’s the result of nearly 10 years of minimal? We get treated to a full plate of swath techno and the like, that’s what.
Absolutely no nonsense with this album, it’s kicked into gear straight away with ‘Strangers’, a murky belter with warped vocals, quite possibly the vocals being your own subconscious trying to get you to do BAD things… that you shouldn’t be doing. ‘Oozewave’ is a club smash, following the old school formula for tech house with a new school twist and perforating drum patterns, the reverberating synths ring through matching the drum work to make this… a never mind the bullshit, just a straight-up-shit kinda track.
‘Reflekts’ is a personal fave, everything about this song works: from the build up to the snares, its equivocal layers make it sound like a train is coming at you! Another great piece on this album is ‘Spillage’, I could give you a rambunctious description, but instead just imagine instead if Bob from Monsters Vs. Aliens had taken a couple of tabs and transformed into a song, that’s what ‘Spillage’ is like… what? It could happen! ‘False Light’ has a lot of great moments and doesn’t wait around too much either, tracks like ‘Say What’, ‘Way Out’ and ‘Dirty Tricks’ continue the equation of good old thought-provoking techno, exactly what you want from Gaiser and Minus.
Enter (the club tour of Minus and another brain child of Richie Hawtin) has gained notorious fame through its events and visits all over the world, especially the Ibiza season. Supporting his album through a mammoth tour and some of the Enter events, including the incredible live visualisations of artist Ahmet Kaplan, you can see Gaiser next weekend for Enter at The Warehouse Project, along with bossman Richie Hawtin and the shape-shifting Recondite.
