Freshers week continues to wreak havoc across the country, and so we continue with our alternative guide: hopefully providing you with some relief from the potentially endless nights of ring of fire, full moon parties and fancy dress pub crawls that, for the most part, defined our own tentative welcome week experiences.
Bristol
The city of Bristol is characterised by a strong sound-system scene: with various branches of dub reggae, drum and bass, dubstep and bassline all cultivating their own niche movements in the city. With legacies such as the infamous St Paul’s Carnival and notorious rave venue Motion (dancing in a half-pipe, anyone?), as well as the Bluemountain venue in St Pauls (playing out a variable range of underground music from house to to old skool and uk garage), Bristol has a long cemented reputation as one of the front-runners in the free party and underground dance scene.
Kick off the week at Warehouse. The unique out of town venue hosts a Circus Special with guests including A-Skillz, Neurofox and the Tremor Soundsystem. Featuring a selection of breaks, electro and ghetto funk in room 1, with d&b in room 2 and room 3 hosted by Bristol’s own Tremor Soundsystem, this is one for the ravers!
On Wednesday 24th Mistajam takes over at Syndicate, which according to various online accounts is sounds somewhat questionable in terms of its ‘super club’ superiority, however – Mistajam! Alternatively, over at Motion Simple Things host an opening party with a live set from Caribou and support from Hyperdub’s Jessy Lanza.
On Thursday 25th, Kissy Sell Out continue their rave on tour at The Lanes, whilst on Friday Trojan Measure team up with Lrusse for a night of house and bass at Timbuk2 with disco vibes in the second room. Alternatively, catch Julio Bashmore at The Old Coroners Court for a special set presented by Mixmag Live.
Saturday sees Tokyo Dub (the first sound system crew at the now-legendary club Motion) provide a range of genres from D&B to Reggae and House over at Eastville Park. Motion host a Rio-themed freshers carnival with Wretch 32, The Dealer and more taking on sets throughout the night.
With exciting things happening with various underground labels such as Kahn and Neek’s Bandulu Imprint and fellow Bristolian bass label Durkle Disco, the citizens of Bristol are putting out some seriously fresh beats right now. Case and point: Lamont’s new ‘Far Away’ EP. Next month, Durkle Disco take over at The Blast x Swamp81 at In:Motion – definitely one to check out if you like your bass!
For a taste, check out the exclusive back-to-back mix their producers Lojik and Unkey have put together for The Blast below.
