It’s that time of the week to run through the best noise, Fresh Out the Gate. Typically busy, this week’s selection features house, tech, a couple of drum and bass releases and a 61 track dubstep super LP.
The biggest signal through the peak meter goes to German Brigante as his ‘Right Now’ EP rolled out this week. A double-edged sword of deep and tech house, the Spanish DJ/producer known for his bumping, groove-infused sound cooks up another hot potato in the form of title track ‘Right Now’. Hard to tell where the sample might have originated but it sounds to us like a heavily distorted Birmingham rude-boy over a skipping, deep beat and drum. The flipside is a tech house refix by EdOne and Bodden. EdOne has previous collabos with the likes of Pirupa (‘Big Oldies’) but Bodden is his preferred partner in crime, dropping deep, swinging, future garage bangers like ‘Do It’ which hit stores in January. Their take on Right Now is reminiscent of DJ W!ld’s ‘Dream of Me’ with a synth that evokes flashbacks of underground tech clubs in Leeds in the early hours.
Next up is the ‘Play Something with Words’ EP from LA-born, London-based DJ/producer Urulu (pictured). Out on Manucci’s Mistress, Play Something with Words is four tracks of Urulu’s deep and techy brand of house. Inspired by the likes of MAW, and Kerri Chandler, Urulu reinvents the heyday of house with added twist of modern production techniques. Top track ‘Believer’ is a thoughtful, spacious mix with strings and pads giving intensity behind dulled, metallic stabs. Urulu showcases his versatility through the remaining three tracks, whether it’s the more uptempo, rolling beat with modulated synth hits freq’ing in and out behind the blink-and-you-miss-it, dreamlike vocal cuts of ‘Drowning’, the more chilled-out, percussive groove of ‘Lost Time’ or the slower, melodic ‘Rest’.
Tropical Heat can’t keep themselves out of our mentions with yet another one-track release, this time the work of Brazilian, Sugar Hill. The super-lively disco biscuit ‘Get Over’ switches the flow of our Minilog from moody, thoughtful vibes to a poz’d-out, feel-good dose of boogie complete with a hands-in-the-air vocal loop.
The ‘Edge of Space’ EP from Philip Bader is definitely worth a mention for a couple of no-nonsense cut and thrust jams from the Berliner plus a collaboration with Daniel Dreier rounding off the three-tracker on Moon Harbour Recs. By the same token, Ramon Tapia’s ‘The Moment’ EP has touched down this week featuring fellow house gangster DJ Sneak on Aella Music and is well worth a listen.
FFRR drop a five-shot remix package to 2013 seminal deep house juggernaut ‘Shake That’ by Marlon Hoffstadt and Dansson. The original is still without doubt the best of the bunch but notable inclusions are the Jesse Rose edit as well remixes from Oliver S and Shadow Child.
A bit of drum and bass now from Kantyze and Phase as they take it turns to drop a track each on the ‘Hollow Body’ EP out on Focuz Recordings. Both equally as engaging, Kantyze’s ‘Hollow Body’ is an energetic offering while Phase’s ‘First Impressions’ is a more laidback groove.
Switching to jungle comes another remix package, with four reworks of ‘I Spy (Eye Nuh See)’ by DJ Monk. His version is first up and would be pick of the bunch were it not for Papa Gee’s super-live, jungle throwback ‘Riddim Remix’ which stole our attention.
Last up is Rob Sparx’s ‘Origins’ release on Migration recordings. 61 tracks of melodic dubstep, way too many to listen to never mind start to describe but ones that caught our eye included ‘Dub Warrior’ and the Distance remix of ‘The Prayer’.
