FREnchfire & Bruised Skies – ‘Make Me Feel’

FREnchfire and Bruised Skies – two dab hands at producing intricate and ambient future garage/post-dub – release new track ‘Make Me Feel’ via SoundCloud.

Amid recent rumours that SoundCloud is in the process of doing a deal with major labels, having previously upset service users by allowing content to be removed without notice by corporations, the online streaming service is not currently showing itself in the best light. However, for the time being it remains an excellent resource through which to explore the belly of the underground and uncover new music from emerging and talented artists.

Two such talented musicians come in the form of FREnchfire and Bruised Skies, the former a DJ and producer based in Manchester, the latter also a producer and hailing from Coventry – albeit beyond this slice of info it was difficult to uncover much more. Regardless, when the music is this good the who’s-who and what’s-what seems somewhat unnecessary. After all, one of the beauties of the internet is it’s world wide accessibility: our first truly liberal medium of communication, geography no longer poses a problem in terms of obtainability. Ipso facto, let’s move onto discussing the tune because that’s really what we’re about here at TNG.

Opening with the ambient swelling synth pads and lo-fi crackles present on many a good post-dub track, the pair’s individual production styles come together to create a mix of laid-back ambience and rising, delicately constructed post-garage ebbs and flows. On ‘Make Me Feel’, reverberated vocals harbouring an R&B lilt stir atop a minimalistic and beautifully put together beat. FREnchfire and Bruised Skies demonstrate an articulate understanding of space throughout, subtly building momentum by occasionally fading out the vocals to allow a simple string part to wind its way through the syncopated beat.

Utterly mellow, utterly ambient, this new release is an example of experimental IDM at it’s most refined. Check out the SoundCloud link below and enjoy. Bless!
