The Stoney Clouds EP (Big Bait Records)

On this groundbreaking four-tracker, scheduled for release on September 23rd, Big Bait Records introduces London-based producer Chocky, supported by Big Bait stalwarts, de:pot and Scherbe. The label describes the EP as “unfolding a wide span of warm and soulful electronic dance music.”

‘Go Bananas’ (Original)
The EP opener sets the tone with smooth drum-patterns rolling under an obscure vocal sample and dirty, modern jazz loops, resulting in what Big Bait calls “shuffle-laden hyperspace house”.

‘Go Bananas’ (Scherbe Remix)
Dresden-resident and long-time Big Bait collaborator, Scherbe, takes control of the remix with a trademark slow house style, turning the original into a cut that’s better suited to to a more composed dancefloor. MPC-grooves and a sparkling synth arpeggio are the key here.

‘Stoney Clouds’ (Original)
The title track opens with huge, DJ-friendly kick drums and jazzy high-hat patterns. In a strangely smooth yet stop-and-go manner, the deep bassline pairs itself with a mellow clap for a late night, smokey deep house workout.

‘Stoney Clouds’ (de:pot Remix)
de:pot’s remix doesn’t even attempt to remain faithful to the original. Instead, jagged, de-quantised percussion builds over twisted vocal samples and keys, before a more rhythmic high-hat pattern brings some order to proceedings. As Big Bait puts it: “it’s one is for the sophisticated headphone connoisseur who likes his B2 sides slow and dirrrty!”
