DJ Zinc follows up on the first instalment of his ‘Structures’ collection with the second EP in the series.
Reviving the energetic breaks and hook-driven basslines that made volume one such a success, volume two follows with with elements of UK bass, jungle and 90s rave all making an appearance to great effect. To top this all off, Food Music bossman Shadow Child steps in with an accomplished remix of ‘Wonderful’: icing, cherry, need we say any more!
Kicking things off is ‘Backup’, a menacing track with jarring lasers and harp strokes leading into a serious Zinc bass pattern guaranteed to liven things up on a dance floor. Followed by the slightly abrasive ‘Vampires’, which features a rapid break driven through a sweeping saw-tooth, things get a bit rough and ready before mellowing out with romantic vocals and a restless organ life on surging house beat ‘With U’.
The original cut of ‘Wonderful’ sees a sweet and silky vocal ride climbing synth tones in what is an effortless club roller from Zinc. The VIP mix from Shadow Child picks up the pace and introduces sonic bleeps and rich drums to create a full build before launching into a tantalisingly simple yet effective stripped-down rework. Closing on ‘Apples’, which nods to Zinc’s junglist past with naughty breaks and a classic rasping bass element, the second volume rounds out nicely with a range of influences throwing their weight into the mix.
