Netherlands group Dilated Pupils have released an EP that is a combination of soulful house mixes and techno inspired backing jams. It has been released under the the Sol Asylum label which is known for bringing a plethora of experimental and deep house tracks into the limelight. The ‘Broken Amp’ EP straddles the line between transcendent chords and fresh underground beats.
The first track ‘Lost Evidence’ offers a heavy bass line that is perfect for late night summer raves. It keeps the momentum of the song flowing. It’s the kind of track that will have your head bobbing as soon as it begins. The best kind of music is the kind that can transport you out of your own consciousness and into another world.
The rhythm guides you and you can afford to lose yourself. ‘Alco B’ achieves this with a broody synth that is spliced with a sparkling undercurrent. This conjures images of a space themed underground disco. Birdmakingmachine comes in with an alternative take on ‘Alco B’ in a remix. This interpretation isn’t as heavy as its predecessor and plays up a cosmic element.
‘Broken Amp’ is a progressive track that takes the listener on a journey through mesmeric beats that grow more prevalent as the music goes on. It’s a cross between deep house and chillstep — the kind of the song that can be soothing as well as inspire a party atmosphere. It is a testament to Dilated Pupils’ skill that they’re able to craft more than one theme into a song.
