Deep Square, otherwise known as Alexander Ivanov, the 18-year-old house producer from St Petersburg (who began his professional career aged just 16) has made his debut on Mulen Records with ‘That’s Right’. The 4-track EP features three original cuts – the title track plus ‘Sidewalk’ and ‘Between us’ – and a remix of ‘That’s Right’ by Romanian artist Egal 3 (Sorin Rastoaca), helping it garner support from the likes of tINI, Loco Dice, Dan Drastic and Shlomi Aber.
‘That’s Right’ drops perfectly inline with Mulen’s music policy of recognisable, catchy house records that explore new territories within the genre; it’s somewhat out of the ordinary but, with its relentless groove, it’s quite clear that the record was created with little else but the dancefloor in mind. Deep Square shuns non-essential elements and allows a modest number of minimal yet bold, chunky sounds to carry the track from start to finish with no small amount of momentum.
‘Sidewalk’ justifies its name by giving the classic juggernaut house sound a wide birth. That’s not to say that it wouldn’t work well on the right floor at the right time, but it’s certainly having a crack at a more unorthodox type of groove, while remaining well within the realms of house music. ‘Between Us’ broadens the gap between the title track even further, but there’s rhythm in spades provided, in part, by short off-beat snares harking back to early 90s speed garage.
Egal 3’s remix transforms ‘That’s Right’ into a much deeper, more atmospheric affair with hollow pads and an abundance of weighty percussion, putting the final flourish on a solid EP.
