Old songs are remixed all the time, for instance Bastille’s ‘Of the Night’ revamp, but very few are particularly original and many simply speed up the song and add a beat. Trentino and Freak Island have gone a step further and taken a classic rock song that hasn’t been heard since the release of Bridget Jones, deepened the vocals (effectively making that famous high note less impressive) and put it to a complex background track that really compliments the song despite its original genre being so different.
The tune is constantly transforming and new sounds are added in, instead of having a four minute introduction of a mediocre beat like many dance songs have for some reason, meaning you don’t get bored halfway through and start playing Candy Crush instead. What’s more, you can actually sing along on the first listen instead of mumbling parts of the chorus towards the end, which is good in theory but make sure you’re alone and not in a public place. The inclusion of lyrics always creates a greater level of interest for the listener, even if they simply want something to slutdrop to, because the voice is practically an instrument of its own and creates a more vibrant mixture of sounds.
Consistently paced with no cut corners, full-sounding and matched well the original track; clearly quite a bit of work has gone into making it. The only criticism is that the deepening of the poor Justin Hawkin’s voice makes it sound a little too distorted and when the beat drops, you want a clear transition to harder beats, but it was a little weak.
However, The Darkness haven’t exactly been frequent chart members since this song, though, so let’s hope Trentino and Freak Island avoid the same ‘one hit wonder’ fate. If interest starts to lag, just remix something by Gareth Gates to get the same results.
