Dan Starie – ‘Noise’ EP

Relatively obscure, journeyman DJ/producer Dan Starie steps up with a two-track EP out soon on Whobear Records. With over 25 years on the ones-and-twos under his belt, he turned producer over a decade ago but has seen little success, despite some national radio play. Not by any means scientific and perhaps a tad unfair on the fella but a quick Beatport name-check reveals no results.

If this release is anything to go by however, things could be starting to look up. Not anything spectacular but an authoritative and well-balanced couple of tracks from the artist formally known as Kid Spirit, Main Ingredients and more regrettably DJ Funksta.

‘To the Rhythm’ is an exquisitely crafted cut with the busy beat the main driving force behind a deep groove and all kinds of sounds coming-and-going on top, to good effect. While it might not grab any headlines, you can’t fault its energy and purpose.

From the get-go ‘Found L’ is a cheeky little mover. Perfectly phrased, panned organs chat back and forth with genuine chemistry over the cocksure bass track. All-in-all a surprise package from the Cambridge lad and a couple slices of tech house definitely worth checking out.

Whobear is a tech label based in the Canaries. Their claim to fame is early releases from tech house, hot property Hector Couto but Alex Roque and Luis Pitti, who run the label, are prolific producers and form a large part of the imprint’s back catalogue.
