Chimpo is one of the jewels in Manchester’s crown. A producer, DJ and emcee with an exuberant and cheeky personality – as exemplified by his moniker – it is perhaps the translation of this essence into his music that has made him not just successful on the scene but popular to boot.
Coming forward with a new five track release for dBridge’s Exit Records; on his new ‘Out An Bad’ EP Manny’s man of the moment shows off a mix of jittery footwork beats and grimy slices of bass, all flavoured with rich dub and junglist undertones.
Opening with ‘Restless Leg Syndrome’ the EP delves straight in on a footwork vibe before launching into ‘Haymaker’, which is essentially a slower and heavier dub-wise rework of Schooly D’s ‘PSK’. Distinguished with thick rave pads and deep electric injections of bass, Chimpo puts his ears to good work on this one.
Following up with the title track ‘Out An Bad’, a personal fave, he pairs a winding and weighty beat with a stream of consciousness flow that encompasses everything from dub plates to the freshness of his socks. Moving back into the footwork-type sound that opens the EP, on closing tracks ‘Bun It’ and ‘Dumb’ he teams up with Fixate to construct a set of skittish and energetic beats which close out the release perfectly.
