Berlin cites EDM as inspiration for new album

Berlin, the American synth pop band made famous by the Top Gun theme song ‘Take My Breath Away’, has credited the current wave of EDM (electronic dance music) sweeping the US as the inspiration for its brand new album, ‘Animal’.

The album, which was released today via Something-Music/INgrooves Fontana, is described as the result of a renewed love affair with current electronic music for frontwoman Terri Nunn, and the belief that Berlin could make an impact on the EDM scene.

“It’s still my favourite medium,” explained Nunn. I’ve loved it since I met John [Crawford – original Berlin bassist] in 1979, when he wanted to bring electronic music to America, because it wasn’t here yet,” she recalls.

Speaking about a weekly radio show that she began programming and hosting last year on KCSN 88.5 in Los Angeles, Nunn told CBS News yesterday: “I got so intensely excited by what’s going on in electronic music right now, especially EDM, that it inspired me. I thought: ‘okay, I can do something here, there’s a place for me in this.’”

‘Animal’ was co-written by Nunn and Derek Cannavo, produced byJohn King (one-half of The Dust Brothers), Bryan Todd and Berlin’s guitarist, Carlton Bost. Some might say that that this crew’s EDM credentials are slim at best, but cynics would do well to remember that Berlin almost single-handedly convinced America to accept electronic music in the early 80s.
