The Acid – ‘Creeper’

Ry Cuming, Steve Nalepa and Adam Freeland had never spent a moment in each other’s company a year ago. The trio, currently living between Los Angeles and Brighton, were happily focusing on promising individual careers as DJ’s and aspiring producers (Freeland was nominated for a Grammy for his electronic exploits on British soil). What a difference twelve months make. Introduced by a mutual friend, the musical partnerships were fermented and The Acid was born. Propelled by the release of their upcoming debut album, ‘Liminal,’ due for release on July 7th, electronic supergroup The Acid give us a taster of their well-oiled minimalist machine with their first single, ‘Creeper.’

Frosty beats meet whispered, Thom Yorke-esque lyrics in a melancholic, haunting musical offering. Immediately, we are met with the bare elements of an archetypical minimalist electronic track. Simple, three-note bassline outlaying the spine of the song, soothing and easing you into its opening bars combining itself with a range of bleeps and simplistic beats as Cuming’s comforting yet beguiling voice whispers, ‘I wanna love you like a creeper knows.’ It’s an impressive and evidently successful combination. Unashamedly stripped back, presenting us with music’s simplest and most relaxed fundamentals, The Acid’s exciting debut undoubtedly aligns and lends itself to the “less is more” mantra. As the track progresses it introduces a mixture of haunting sound effects with a piercing drum beat which almost disrupts the tranquillity the opening minute or so has created whilst adding another dimension to the group’s understated subtleties.

Beginning a very brief UK tour mid-June, The Acid appears to have found success in a tried and tested yet nevertheless winning formula. Still in their infancy, it seems as though the trio’s musical bromance looks set to blossom and flourish this summer.
